On the morning of September 19th, 2018, at the headquarter of General Statistics Office (GSO), the Central Steering Committee for the Economic Census held a press conference to announce official results of the 2017 Economic Census. Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO, Standing Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for the Economic Census, chaired the press conference. Attending this event were members of the Standing Team assisting the Central Census Steering Committee; leaders of units under the GSO; representatives of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Information and Communications, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam Trade Treasury, General Department of Taxation; and representatives of press agencies.
To implement the Decision No. 1672/QD-TTg dated August 26th, 2016 of the Prime Minister, in 2017, the GSO – Permanent Agency in coordination with ministries, line-ministries and localities conducted the Economic Census, promptly collect, aggregate, process information according to the plan and schedule proposed. Up to now, the aggregation of official data has been completed.
Mr. Nguyen Trung Tien, Deputy Director General of GSO introduced thematic publications compiled based on the 2017 Economic Census’s results
The 2017 Economic Census reflected an overall picture of the development of establishments in the period 2012-2017 at nationwide, by economic region and by provinces. The results showed that establishments revealed a slow growth tendency in the administrative units, but a high upward trend in the economic sectors, especially in enterprise sector. It means that the implementation of socio-economic development policies in the period 2012-2017 has been witnessed positive effects in the direction of streamline state management and facilitating the development of economic sector (especially the business sector). The economy size has been increasingly expanded with an annual increase in number of enterprises and a slow growth trend or even stagnancy in number of individual business establishments. The 2017 Economic Census also points out limitations of the enterprise sector which were gradual down-turn in average size of employees per enterprise, fragmentation of individual business establishments and stagnation in socialization progress of administrative activities. Information technology has not been widely and effectively applied in state authorities, especially local authorities. This is a great limitation that needs to be objectively viewed in the context of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 has been being deployed in Vietnam.

At the press conference, the GSO introduced thematic publications compiled based on the 2017 Economic Census’s results serving information users.
Also at this press conference, all questions related to the results of the 2017 Economic Census from participants and reporters were satisfactorily answered by members of the Central Steering Committee for the Economic Census.
