Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO had a speech at the reception
In the morning, April 8, 2019, the General Statistics Office had a courtesy reception for the expert delegation from the IMF coming to help the Government of Vietnam as well as the GSO to review the method of re-assessing GDP scale for 5 days from April 8 to 12, 2019. Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam – General Director of GSO presided over the reception. Attending the meeting were Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Deputy General Director of GSO; representatives of professional units under the GSO.
The re-evaluation of GDP on the basis of arguments and recommendations on national accounts system aims to overcome the shortcomings arising in the previous compilation process, continue to improve professional methods in accordance with standards, international practices and Vietnam’s real situation of economy, thereby enhance the quality of statistical data, help the management, administration and development of appropriate and effective plans and strategies for the country’s development.

To properly assess the transformation of the country’s economy, in 2018, the GSO conducted the re-evaluation of the GDP basing on the data from the Censuses (the 2017 Economic Census and the Rural, Agricultural and Fishery Census 2016). Under the Government’s requirement, the GSO has chosen the IMF, a prestigious independent organization, to partner in reviewing its method of assessment, and then the GSO will publish the results of GDP re-evaluation. These results will be important references for the Government of Vietnam to develop a socio-economic development plan for the period 2021-2025 and a 10-year socio-economic development strategy for 2021-2030.
Director General Nguyen Bich Lam, on behalf of the GSO, thanked the IMF’s experts and highly appreciated the IMF’s support for Vietnam’s Statistics in many fields, especially in the field of national accounts.
