Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Deputy Director General of GSO, delivered a speech at the press conference
In the morning, July 10, 2020, in Hanoi, the General Statistics Office (GSO) held a press conference to announce the statistics on labor and employment situation in the second quarter and 6 months of 2020. Mr. Pham Quang Vinh – Deputy Director General of GSO chaired the press conference. Attending this event were Ms. Valentina Barcucci, Deputy Director of the ILO Country Office for Vietnam in Hanoi; representatives of Ministry of Planning and Investment; representatives of Ministry of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs; representatives of units under the GSO; and reporters from press agencies in Hanoi. The press conference was connected to 63 online bridgeheads at provincial statistical offices of 63 provinces and centrally-run cities.
At the conference, the GSO announced the statistics on labor force in the second quarter and 6 months of 2020 and the report on the impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic on labor and employment situation in Vietnam. Accordingly, Covid-19 epidemic appeared in Vietnam since January 2020, directly affecting the situation of labor and employment in industries and in all provinces and centrally-run cities, especially the second quarter of 2020 witnessed the most pronounced effect. As of June 2020, the country had 30.8 million people aged 15 and above that were negatively affected by Covid-19. The labor force and employed labor force have decreased by over 2 million, the largest drop in the past 10 years. The service sector was most negatively affected with 72.0% of workers affected. This is the first year workers’ income in the second quarter has suffered the drop compared to the same period last year in the past 5 years (down 5.1%).

Also at the press conference, representatives of the GSO answered questions from reporters on labor and employment issues under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its forcastation about labor and employment situation for the last 6 months of 2020.
