In the afternoon of November 27, 2020, the 6th China – ASEAN Statistics Forum was organized online by the National Bureau of Statistics of China. Participants were representatives from the National Bureau of Statistics of China; People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; ASEAN member state statistical offices and the ASEAN Secretariat. The delegation of the General Statistics Office (GSO) attending the Forum was Deputy Director General Pham Quang Vinh, leading representatives of Population and Labor Statistics Department and the Foreign statistics and International Cooperation Department.
Opening the Forum, Mr. Ning Jizhe, Head of National Bureau of Statistics of China and Mr. Qin Rupei, on behalf of leaders of People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, made the opening speeches. On behalf of GSO, Mr Pham Quang Vinh also delivered a speech as ASEAN President for Statistics 2020, highly appreciated the Forum on Statistics between China and ASEAN. With the theme “Strengthening China – ASEAN Statistical Exchange and Cooperation” and “Practice population census and demographic surveys”, the Forum aims to exchange experiences on organizing and implementing population census and demographic surveys, applying information technology particularly in Population census and demographic surveys, reinforce the agreement reached in the previous 5 Forums on China-ASEAN Statistics, continuously expanding fields of China-ASEAN cooperation and statistical exchange, improving the statistical capacity and qualifications between China and ASEAN countries.
Speaking at the Forum, Mr Pham Quang Vinh emphasized the role of the Population and Housing Census and the demographic surveys are an important data source to provide essential information for building socio-economic development strategy. This forum is expected to assist each country in building new directions, new solutions in the process to implement the census and contribute to tighten the solidarity and spirit of cooperation between the parties.
During the Forum, representatives of each country presented their experiences in population census and demographic surveys. From Vietnam’s delegation, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Deputy Director of Population and Labor Statistics Department gave a presentation on the 2019 Vietnam Population and Housing Census as well as procedures to conduct the survey, benefits and lessons learned from the Census.
Speeching at the closing remarks, Mr Pham Quang Vinh thanked the National Bureau of Statistics of China and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for organizing the Forum successfully. The Deputy Director General also expressed his thanks to the attendance of ASEAN member state statistical offices for and their sharing in experiences on the census and demographic survey.
