This is a large-scale sample survey, covering approximately 20% of all enumeration areas nationwide (equivalent to 39,340 areas). The sample design ensures district-level representativeness (prior to administrative mergers for population size indicators and provincial-level representativeness for the remaining indicators.
The Survey collects essential information on population and demographics, population changes (births, deaths, and migration), and household living and housing conditions. This is the second Intercensal Survey conducted in Viet Nam, following the first carried out in 2014. The Survey aims to provide population and housing data to support the assessment of progress toward the 2021 – 2025 Socio-economic Development Plan; the development of population and housing policies for the 2026-2030 Socio-economic Development Plan; and the monitoring of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to which the Government of Viet Nam has committed.
To continue providing survey data and insights into future demographic trends and population structure, and to meet the growing needs of policy development, socio-economic planning, and workforce management at both national and local levels, the National Statistics Office is under taking the “Viet Nam Population Projections, 2024-2074.” This initiative aims to provide a reliable data foundation for policymakers and researchers in their processes of assessment, planning, and decision-making.
The report “Viet Nam Population Projections, 2024–2074” presents estimates of the population in 2024 based on the results of the 2024 Intercensal Population and Housing Survey, along with population projections for the whole country, urban and rural areas, the six socio-economic regions, and 34 centrally governed provinces and cities for the period 2024–2074. These projections are derived from baseline data from the 2024 Intercensal Population and Housing Survey and from assumptions about future changes in key demographic indicators, and were generated using the DAPPS 4.0 projection software developed by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The report “Viet Nam Population Projections, 2024–2074” was prepared by the National Statistics Office in collaboration with experts and with the technical support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The National Statistics Office sincerely appreciates the cooperation and support of UNFPA in implementing the 2024 Intercensal Population and Housing Survey and in producing this publication.
The National Statistics Office would also like to express our gratitude to the experts and staff of the UNFPA Country Office in Viet Nam for their valuable contributions throughout the drafting and finalization of this report. Special thanks are extended to Mr. Tim Miller, chief demographer at PopTerra, for his support in training and guiding the use of the projection software, as well as for his insightful comments that contributed to the completion of the report.
The National Statistics Office is pleased to present the report “Viet Nam Population Projections, 2024–2074.”
