Economic development and growth depend on a country’s young people. However, many countries today, especially developing countries, including Vietnam are facing increasing difficulties in creating jobs in accordance with the growing requirements for the youth.
To determine the specific way for young workers and assist policy makers in designing and developing appropriate tools to assess the youth labor force participation rate more in more details, on February 22, 2019, in Hanoi, the General Statistics Office (GSO) in coordination with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) organized a workshop on improving youth labor market performance in emerging market and developing economies. The workshop was chaired by Ms. Vu Thi Thu Thuy – Director of Population and Labor Statistics Department under the GSO; Mr. John Bluedorn – IMF’s senior economist; and Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Anh – Economist, IMF Representative Office in Hanoi. Attending the workshop was participants from ministries and line-ministries, international and domestic research institutes; representatives of units under the GSO.
At the workshop, Mr. John Bluedorn presented the IMF’s report on the work in progress of improving youth labor market performance in emerging market and developing economies (EMDE). In his research, he analyzed and pointed out the causes of the youth’s high unemployment and inactivity rate in EMDE sector. According to him, young people in developing economies with emerging market account for a large proportion of the working-age population and are at high risk of being unemployed, outside the labor force and schools. It is necessary to design and develop appropriate institutions for labor and product market in order to improve the prospect of employment for both the youth who do not go to school and adults.
In her closing remarks, Ms. Vu Thi Thu Thuy – Director of Population and Labor Statistics Department (GSO) thanked IMF experts and delegates for participating in the workshop. She hoped that experiences and lessons from experts’ research results and opinions of delegates can be applied to solve issues related to youth labor in Vietnam.
