Within the framework of the Project “Strengthening the production capacity and dissemination of statistics from Viet Nam’s energy balance sheets”, on the morning of July 19th, 2018, the General Statistics Office (GSO) in coordination with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) held the workshop on the assessment of the real situation of compiling energy balance sheet in Vietnam. Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Deputy Director General of GSO chaired the workshop.
This event was attended by Mr. Teerapong Praphotjanaporn, representative of ESCAP; representative of energy statistics experts of ESCAP; representatives of relevant ministries, line-ministries; representatives of leaders and staffs of units under the GSO.
The target of the Project is to support the GSO in compiling balance sheets, including: (1) Assessing the real situation, thereby identifying shortcomings and limitations in compiling energy balance sheet in Vietnam and providing solutions and methods to complete it; (2) Proposing to compile Vietnam’s energy balance sheets from 2016 onwards according to international standards and suitable for Vietnam.
The Project consists of the following activities: (1) Identifying data gaps, key users and priority areas in the plan in order to perfect input information sources for energy statistics and compiling national energy balance sheet; (2) Completing the information sources for energy statistics and national energy balance sheet, including filling the main data gaps and compiling national energy balance sheet in accordance with international standards and in line with Vietnam; (3) Legalizing professional documents and maintaining the Project’s results, sharing and providing annual information on energy statistics and national energy balance sheet with regional and international energy agencies.
It is expected that by the end of 2018, the energy balance sheet for 2016 will be finalized. In 2019, the GSO will officially announce the energy balance sheet in the Statistical Yearbook and some publications on the GSO’s website.
Also in the framework of the workshop, participants heard the report on the real situation of compiling energy balance sheet in Vietnam presented by Mr. Vu Van Tuan, former Director of the Industrial Statistics Department (GSO), a domestic expert, and presentations by representatives of Institute of Energy, Vietnam and ESCAP experts. Participants took part in discussions and offered recommendations at the workshop.
In his workshop closing remarks, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh highly appreciated the serious working spirit of participants. According to him, this was the most official evaluation workshop to assess the real situation of compiling energy balance sheet in Vietnam. On the basis of the results of this workshop, national and international experts will give recommendations and solutions to complete information sources, make plan to build and disseminate the national energy balance sheet of Vietnam in accordance with international standards and in line with the real conditions of Vietnam.
