Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director General of GSO chaired the working session
On the morning of August 14, 2020, in Hanoi, the General Statistics Office (GSO) had a working session with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on the assessment of the implementation of the VNM9P03 project in the period 2017-2021 and exchange of statistical areas which can be coordinated to implement and priority goals to support in the next cooperation period. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director General of GSO chaired the meeting. Attending this meeting were Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Deputy Director General of GSO, the VNM9P03 Project Director and members of the Project Management Board from units under the GSO. On the side of UNFPA, Ms. Naomi Kitahara, UNFPA Chief Representative in Vietnam together with participants from UNFPA in charge of population, development and other areas related to statistics.
Mid-term implementation results of the VNM9P03 project are as follows:
(1) Objective 1 on supporting the GSO in application of information technology in collecting data, analyzing and disseminating the results of the 2019 Population and Housing Census and other censuses to serve the development and monitoring of the implementation of socio-economic development policies and plans has been basically accomplished. In which the 2019 Survey on the Socio-economic Situation of 53 Ethnic Minority Groups was supported through sending international experts to assist in sampling;

(2) Objective 2 on providing technical assistance in the implementation of the national action program on civil registration and vital statistics, focusing on the exploitation and dissemination vital statistics from the civil register system in order to serve for evidence-based policy making” is still underway;
(3) Objective 3 on supporting the development of the Monitoring Framework for Vietnam’s Sustainable Development Objectives (SGDs)” has been completed;
(4) Objective 4 on providing technical assistance in the use of data and evidence to promote legislative quality and policy monitoring in the areas of population, health and gender equality, integrating population issues into socio-economic development projects and plans, integrating gender issues in legislation is continuing to be implemented;
(5) Objective 5 on promoting social criticism on population and development policies and issues with a focus on the Population Law and key population issues for policy advice and monitoring is on the way to achieve.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director General of GSO suggested UNFPA to continue to support and cooperate in the coming time with the following specific activities: Researching on the use of administrative data on population, demographics and migration to update data, minimize traditional surveys and increase the exploitation of administrative records as well as the combination of surveys in a maximum and most effective way; Researching to expand the scope of population statistics associated with socio-economic development and climate change issues; Continuing to give support to specialized censuses on population to more clarify the picture of population and migration among regions; Continuing to give support to statistical analysis and forecasting to obtain thematic reports and to the development of long-term strategic statistical analysis reports acquiring international knowledge.
Ms. Naomi Kitahara, UNFPA Chief Representative in Vietnam asked the GSO to ensure the Project’s activities to be implemented according to the proposed plan. At the same time, she emphasized that UNFPA were always ready to accompany the GSO in the coming surveys.
