1. Agriculture, forestry, and fishing
a) Agriculture
– As of January 20th, 2026, the harvested area nationwide reached 1,910.7 hectares of winter-spring rice, equal to 93.7% of the same period last year. Of which the Northern localities reached 181.1 thousand hectares, equal to 79.4%; the Southern localities reached 1,729.6 thousand hectares, equal to 95.5%.
– Annual crops: The cultivating progress of crops such as maize, sweet potatoes, soybeans, peanuts, etc., was recorded low, mainly due to the impact of storms and floods in the last months of 2025.
– Livestock: Pig farming witnessed a positive recovery after the impact of disease outbreaks, while poultry farming witnessed a stability, satisfying consumer need during the Lunar New Year. The pig population nationwide showed a year-on-year upturn of 2.8% in January 2026; the cattle population experienced a downturn of 1.7%; the buffalo population showed a fall of 4.5%, while the poultry population saw an increase of 5.2%.
b) Forestry
The area of newly concentrated planted forest in January 2026 was estimated at 9.5 thousand hectares nationwide, a year-on-year growth of 8.4%; the number of scattered planted trees reached 3.9 million, rising by 1.3%; wood production reached 1,245.2 thousand m3, falling by 3.0%. The damaged forest area was estimated at 16.5 hectares, falling by 57.3%, of which the burned area was 0.8 hectares, falling by 65.2%, the damaged area was 15.7 hectares, falling by 56.7%.
c) Fishing
Capture fisheries and aquaculture production in January 2026 was estimated at 613.8 thousand tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.6%, of which aquaculture production was estimated at 341.2 thousand tons, rising by 3.5%; capture fisheries production was estimated at 272.6 thousand tons, increasing by 3.8%.
2. Industrial production
– In January, the IIP was estimated to decrease by 0.2% month-on-month and increase by 21.5% year-on-year. Specifically, the manufacturing recorded a year-on-year increase of 23.6%; the water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities grew by 13.6%; the production and distribution of electricity increased by 14.1%; and the mining and quarrying rose by 10.3%.
– The IIP in January, 2026 experienced a year-on-year increase in all 34 provinces and municipalities.
– The number of employees in industrial enterprises as of January 1, 2026 saw a month-on-month growth of 0.8% and year-on-year increase of 4.3%.
3. Enterprise registration performance
In January 2026, the whole country had nearly 24.2 thousand newly established enterprises, a month-on-month increase of 40.9%, a year-on-year increase of 126.8%. In addition, the country had more than 24.5 thousand resumed operation enterprises, a month-on-month increase of 146.2% and a year-on-year growth of 7.6%, bringing the total number of newly established and resumed operation enterprises in January 2026 to nearly 48.7 thousand enterprises, a year-on-year increase of 45.6%.
In January 2026, the number of enterprises temporarily suspending for a definite time was nearly 54.3 thousand enterprises, a year-on-year increase of 2.8%; 7,303 enterprises suspended operation waiting for dissolution procedures, an increase of 109.1%; 4,609 enterprises completed procedures for dissolution, an increase of 128.1%. The number of enterprises withdrew from the market was 66.2 thousand enterprises, a year-on-year increase of 13.5%.
4. Investment
– The disbursed investment from the State budget in January of 2026 was estimated at 43.1 trillion VND, equivalent to 4.8% of the annual plan and a year-on-year increase of 19.3% (the rate in 2025 was 3.6% and up 11.8%, respectively).
– Total inward foreign investment in Viet Nam as of January 31st, 2026, including newly registered capital, adjusting registered capital, and capital contribution and purchasing shares by foreign investors, reached 2.58 billion USD, a year-on-year decrease of 40.6%.
– The disbursed FDI in Viet Nam in January 2026, was estimated at 1.68 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 11.3%.
– Viet Nam’s outward investment in January 2026 witnessed 27 projects granted with new investment certificates with a total capital of 230.8 million USD, 2.8 times higher than that in the same period last year; 2 turns of projects adjusted their capital with an additional amount of 7.5 million USD. Generally, the total Viet Nam’s outward FDI (newly granted and adjusted capital) reached 238.3 million USD, 2.9 times higher than that in the same period last year.
5. State budget revenue and expenditure[1]
The total state budget revenue in January, 2026 was estimated at 370.7 trillion VND, equivalent to 14.7% of the annual estimate and up 20.4% year-on-year.
The total state budget expenditure in January, 2026 was estimated at 163.0 trillion VND, equivalent to 5.2% of the annual estimate and up 6.4% year-on-year.
6. Trade, prices, transport and tourism
a) Retail sales of goods and services
The gross retail sales of goods and services at current prices in January 2026 were estimated at 632.4 trillion VND, a month-on-month increase of 2.6% and a year-on-year rise of 9.3% (equivalent to the growth rate recorded in the same period of 2025); excluding price factors, the increase was 6.3% year-on-year (compared with an increase of 6.5% in the same period of 2025).
b) Export and import of goods[2]
In January, the total export and import turnover of goods[3] reached 88.16 billion USD, a month-on-month decrease of 0.6% but a year-on-year increase of 39.0%, of which exports increased by 29.7% and imports rose by 49.2% . The trade balance of goods recorded a trade deficit of 1.78 billion USD.
– Export of goods
+ The export turnover of goods in January 2026 amounted to 43.19 billion USD, a month-on-month decrease of 2.0% and a year-on-year rise of 29.7%.
+ Regarding the structure of exported commodities in January 2026, the group of manufactured products reached 38.43 billion USD, accounting for 89.0%.
– Import of goods
+ The import turnover of goods in January 2026 amounted to 44.97 billion USD, a month-on-month increase of 0.6% and a year-on year rise of 49.2%.
+ Regarding the structure of imported commodities in January 2026, the group of capital goods reached 42.3 billion USD, accounting for 94.0%.
– Regarding the export and import markets in January 2026, the United States was Viet Nam’s largest export market, with a turnover of 13.9 billion USD, while China was Viet Nam’s largest import market, with a turnover of 19.0 billion USD.
– According to preliminary data, the trade balance of goods in January 2026 recorded a trade deficit of 1.78 billion USD (compared with a trade surplus of 3.17 billion USD in the same period last year). Of which, the domestic economic sector recorded a trade deficit of 3.4 billion USD, while the FDI sector (including crude oil) recorded a trade surplus of 1.62 billion USD.
c) Consumer price index, Gold and US dollar index
– The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in January witnessed a month-on-month slight increase of 0.05%, a year-on-year expansion of 2.53%; core inflation in January 2026 rose by 3.19%
– The gold price index in January witnessed a month-on-month soar of 5.02% and surge of 77.1% compared to that in the same period last year.
– The US dollar price index in January experienced month-on-month fall of 0.29%; and an increase of 3.18% compared to that in the same period last year.
d) Passenger and freight transport
Passengers carried in January were estimated at 525.5 million turns of passengers, recording a month-on-month increase of 5.0%, a year-on-year growth of 16.3%; and passenger carried (passenger-kilometers) was estimated at 28.5 billion passengers-kilometers, experiencing a month-on-month growth of 5.3% and a year-on-year increase 10.1%.
Freight transported in January was estimated at 279.0 million tons, recording a month-on-month increase of 2.2% and a year-on-year rise of 17.4%; freight transported (ton-kilometers) reached 57.7 billion ton-kilometers, recording a month-on-month growth of 1.9% and a year-on-year rise of 17.2%.
đ) International visitors to Viet Nam
More and more international visitors came to Viet Nam thanks to breakthrough visa policies, strong innovations in tourism promotion and marketing, along with efforts to diversify tourism products and improve service quality. In January, the number of international visitors to Viet Nam reached nearly 2.5 million, recording a month-on-month increase of 21.4% and a year-on-year rise of 18.5%.
7. Social situation
– In January 2026, the survey results showed that 95.3% of households assessed their income during the month as unchanged or increased compared to the same period last year, while 4.7% reported that their income decreased or was undetermined.
Timely attention was paid to the social security work by all levels and sectors, from central to local authorities, especially in providing supports for policy beneficiaries, the poor, and vulnerable groups to ensure that everyone enjoys a joyful and warm Lunar New Year. On the occasion of the Lunar New Year and to celebrate the 14th National Congress of the Party, the Government and the President issued resolutions and decisions to provide cash gifts to national devotees and social protection beneficiaries with appropriate support levels.
Furthermore, implementation of the policy on ensuring social security, as of January 29th, 2026, the Government supported people with nearly 13.4 thousand tons of rice to those facing difficulties due to hunger, natural disasters, and during holidays and festivals. Of which, over 7.4 thousand tons of rice were supported for approximately 493.4 thousand persons during the Lunar New Year; over 5.37 thousand tons of rice were provided for 358.2 thousand persons for hunger relief during the pre-harvest season and over 604 tons of rice were provided to 40.3 thousand persons to overcome the consequences of natural disasters and floods.
– According to the Ministry of Health’s report, during the month (from December 18th, 2025 to January 17th, 2026), the country recorded 20.2 thousand cases of dengue fever (2 deaths); 7,963 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease; 989 cases of rash fever suspected of measles; 26 cases of viral encephalitis; 6 cases of meningococcal meningitis; 2 deaths of rabies. In January, there were 3 cases of food poisoning, poisoning 89 persons (1 death).
– Regarding culture, in January, numerous large-scale cultural activities, including artistic programs, film programmes, exhibitions and festivals, were actively organized nationwide to celebrate the success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, the New Year 2026 and the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse).
Regarding sports, Viet Nam achieved a number of notable results, including the Viet Nam U23 national football team winning the Asian bronze medal; a total of 144 medals at the 13th ASEAN Para Games; along with other international and domestic achievements in MMA, women’s football, and various major tournaments.
– In January (from December 26th, 2025 to January 25th, 2026), there were 1,528 cases of traffic accident nationwide, causing 904 deaths and 945 injuries. On average, in January, there were 49 traffic accidents, causing 29 deaths and 31 injuries a day.
– In January (from December 18th, 2025 to January 17th, 2026), the functional authorities detected 3,160 environmental violations in 32 out of 34 localities, of which, 2,678 cases were addressed with a total fine of 36.7 billion VND, experiencing a month-on-month increase of 79.3% and a year-on-year increase of 19.6%. During the month (from December 15th, 2025 to January 14th, 2026), 260 cases of fire and explosion occurred nationwide, causing 12 deaths and 12 injuries with an estimated loss of 193.2 billion VND, experiencing a month-on-month decrease of 15.9% and 16.5 times higher than the figure of the same period last year./.
