In the first month of 2021, due to supportive policies and solutions from the state, industrial production flourished with a high growth rate of 22.2% over the same period last year. Of which, a number of industries had good growth, especially manufacturing. In order for industrial production to continue to maintain growth rate and contribute to overall growth of the whole economy in 2021, some key industries need to have timely solutions based on production growth in January are as follows:

 – Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply:

The index of industrial production (IIP) of electricity production and distribution in January 2021 increased by 16.3% over the same period last year; electricity output reached 19.6 billion kWh, up 18%.

In January, the electricity system across the country ensured the quality of electricity for socio-economic development and ensured safe and stable operation of the entire national power system during the 13rd Party Congress. At the same time, the hydroelectric plants in the North are increasing electricity generation to serve Northern regions to take water for the Winter-Spring crop of 2020-2021 in phase 1 and phase 2, ensuring that the power supply for pumping stations operates stably. during the time of taking water for rice cultivation.

– Extraction of crude petroleum and nutural gas:

The IIP of extraction of crude petroleum and nutural gas decreased by 13.6% over the same period last year; crude oil output reached 770 thousand tons, down by 12.5%; exploitation of natural gas in the form of gas reached 620 million m3, down 15.1%; Liquefied gas (LPG) reached 74.7 thousand tons, down 0.1%.

In 2021, the oil and gas industry should continue to follow oil price movements to have timely solutions to cope with fluctuations in oil prices from time to time; reasonably coordinate between exploitation, export and manufacturing output to ensure efficiency between economic growth targets, state budget revenue, energy security and the efficiency of production and business of enterprises.

– Coal industry (Mining of coal and lignite):

IIP of coal industry in January 2021 increased by 3.2% over the same period last year; pure coal output reached 3.5 million tons, up 3.1%.

Coal industry has focused on directing and operating production based on market demand from the first months of 2021. Some solutions are applied to develop production in 2021 such as continuing to promote investment and upgrading material foundations, systems of warehouses and yards; to step up the application of science and technology, mechanization and automation to production, especially in the exploitation, processing, and improving the quality of coal products, ensuring economic efficiency.

– Textile industry:

Textile and apparel IIP industry increased by 16.6% and 9.9% over the same period in 2020, textile products from synthetic fibers reached 92.4 million m2, up by 20.4% over the same period last year; fabrics made from natural fibers reached 57.4 million m2, up by 35.6%; casual clothes reached 380.1 million pieces, up 9.3%. Export turnover of textiles and garments in January reached US $ 2.6 billion, up by 3.3%.

Currently, the Covid-19 pandemic remains complicated globally, the negative impact of the pandemic may last for 1-2 years. The year 2021 is still a year that the textile and garment market continues to be facing difficults, depending on the pandemic situation in the world.

However, the textile industry is facing a huge development opportunity from the newly signed Free Trade Agreements, especially the potential to expand exports to major markets around the world. In particular, the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and Europe officially took effect from August 1, 2020 and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) was signed in November 2020 creating motivation and opportunities for Vietnam’s garment and textile. This is a positive factor supporting production and business activities of Vietnam Textile and Garment in 2021 and the following years.

– The Leather footwear industry:

In January 2021, IIP of leather and related products industry was estimated to increase by 20.8% over the same period last year; the output of shoes and leather sandals reached 21.9 million pairs, up 3%; the export turnover of shoes and slippers of all kinds reached US $ 1.8 billion, up by 26.4%.

Similar to the textile and garment industry, leather footwear enterprises have actively seized and exploited advantages of the trade agreements in order to create a breakthrough in production and promote exports. At the same time, due to impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, new supply chains are being re-established, which is opportunitíe for Vietnamese leather footwear enterprises to participate more deeply in the global supply chain.

– Tobacco industry:

Tobacco manufacturing IIP in January 2021 increased by 23.1% over the same period in 2020; tobacco production output reached 469 million bags, up by 23%. Along with essential consumer goods, tobacco is also a commodity in high demand during Tet holidays. However, the tobacco industry has ensured a stable supply to the market; at the same time, the fight against cigarette smuggling has been strongly deployed;  functional forces in localities across the country are determined to fight, promptly detect and strictly handle acts of smuggling, transporting, storing and trading smuggled cigarettes.
