Gender statistics help policymakers recognize the differences and inequalities between women and men, as well as their needs and priorities. Thence, policymakers have a foundation to develop, review, implement, and monitor socio economic development policies and programs, ensuring maximum benefits for both women and men, while promoting substantive gender equality across all sectors.
In order to enhance the dissemination of gender statistics and encourage institutions, organizations and individuals to pay attention to and use gender statistics, the General Statistics Office (now called National Statistics Office (NSO)) firstly developed a set of national statistical indicators on gender development (SNSIGD), including 105 indicators, which was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 56/2011/QD-TTg dated 14 October 2011. After that, publications on gender statistics were compiled and published by the NSO in 2012, 2016 and 2018.
In 2019, the SNSIGD was reviewed, revised and updated in accordance with the actual situation. On July 30, 2019, the SNSIGD with 78 indicators was issued by the Minister of Planning and Investment (now namely Ministry of Finance) in Circular 10/2019/TT-BKHDT. Accordingly, the National Statistics Office collected, synthesized and compiled publications on gender statistics in Viet Nam for the year 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. The publication introduces an overview of the rationale for gender equality as well as analyzes and evaluates gender statistics, present data tables and graphs on the following topics: Population; Labour, Employment and access to resources; Leadership and management; Educations and training; Healthcare and related services. Statistical information in the publication was collected and compiled from sources: Statistical reports provided by state management agencies, national surveys conducted by the NSO.
We hope that this publication will provide fruitful statistics on the existing men and women relations as well as gender gaps in society. Also, it is expected to facilitate analysis and forecast of gender impacts of legislation, policies and programmes for women and men to ensure their equal access, participation, and benefits from the national development process. We expects that this publication will promote specific ideas and actions towards closing the existing gender gaps in Viet Nam.
The NSO would like to express its sincere thanks to relevant ministries, stakeholders for their close coordination in reviewing and updating policies and providing data and information for this publication.
As the publication may reveal inevitable shortcomings, we welcome any comments to improve its quality. All comments should be sent to: The Social and Environmental Statistics Department, the National Statistics Office, 54 Nguyen Chi Thanh, Hanoi, email: xahoimoitruong@nso.gov.vn.
