Over the past years, implementing many important programs, plans, and projects on forest protection and development so that the forestry sector has gained many important achievements, contributing to raise awareness and attract attention and support from the whole society; contribute positively to socio-economic development, environmental protection and response to climate change of the country. The development of the Forestry sector is an essential condition for the wood manufacturing and the production of products from wood, bamboo, and cork, also oriented to become a key economic sector in forestry production, contributing to raisie the value of Vietnam’s export turnover.
In recent years, the development of the Wood industry has been more prosperous. The index of industrial production of the wood industry in the period 2016-2020 increased by an average of 3.4%/year, of which in 2017 increased by 4.6%; in 2018 increased by 4%; in 2019, the highest growth rate by 10.3% in 2019, and in 2020 decreased by 4.6%. Particularly in 2020, there are many changes in forestry production, the domestic and international economy affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the first six months of 2020, the main products of the forestry sector slowed down, especially wood products exploited due to the consumption chain of wood manufacturing products such as peeled wood, pulp and wood chips of enterprises, factories were interrupted. In the last six months of the year, the wood market was considered to be more prosperous, the exploited wood products increase highly, meeting the demand for domestic consumption and export. Wood and wood products are still one of the key economic export products of the country and a bright spot in the export picture.
In addition, despite economic difficulties, production has been delayed, businesses, entrepreneurs, forest owners and managers throughout the industry are continuously researching, creating, changing many methods and form of marketing and sales to expand export markets besides the traditional and important markets of Vietnamese wood and forest products such as the United States, Japan, China, Korea and Europe. In localities, there have appeared many models of high-value forest tree production, large timber trading, especially in the field of forest production and processing for export, or conversion of forest planting models for timber in the direction of improving high productivity, quality value of planted production forests.

In the first months of 2021, although the disease situation continued to evolve complicatedly in the country and in the world, the wood industry still maintained the growth rate of the index of industrial production in January 2021 with 26.4% compared to the same period last year; in February 2021 decreased by 15% and for the first 2 months of 2021 increased by 4.3%.
The output of wood exploited from planted forests has increased continuously over the periods, from 3.01 million m3 in 2006 to 19.5 million m3 in 2019, estimated at 20.5 million m3 by 2020 and basically reaching the target. The strategy is 20-24 million m3/year. However, the target of exploiting large timber of 10 million m3/year has not been achieved; The output of firewood exploitation will reach 19.5 million steres by 2019, not yet reach the target of 25-26 million m3/year. In the first 2 months of 2021, the exploited wood output reached 1.85 million m3, an increase of 3.5%; the output of firewood exploited and collected reached 2.73 million steres, equaling 98.9%.
The increase in plantation timber output has enabled the manufacturing to actively prepare over 70% of input materials, gradually reducing dependence on imported raw materials, contributing to reducing production costs and prices, at the same time creating a competitive advantage for Vietnamese wood products.
For the exploitation of timber from natural forests, before 2010, our country had exploited an average of 0.7 million m3/year; in 2010, to exploit 0.25 million m3/year, in 2011 to exploit 0.2 million m3/year, in 2012 to exploit 0.11 million m3/year; from 2016 to stop exploiting, close natural forests nationwide according to the Resolution of the 7th Conference of the 11th Party Central Committee on “Management of rational exploitation, early termination of exploitation of natural forests. “.
Currently, Vietnam has become a wood processing center of Asia. Due to the inadequate supply of raw materials for processing served domestic consumption and export, our country has to import a huge amount of raw wood from abroad every year. Vietnam’s exports and exports of wood and wood products play a huge role in the source of imported wood materials.
Despite facing many difficulties, competition and requirements to ensure the legal origin of timber in many export markets, wood export continues to achieve positive results. The export turnover of wood and wood products in 2020 reach US $12,372 million, accounting for 4.4% of the total export turnover and 1.8 times more than the export turnover of wood in 2015; in the first 2 months of 2021, it reached US $ 2,441 million, up by 51% from the same period last year.
The rapid growth rate of Vietnam’s wood industry in recent years has contributed greatly from the openness of the domestic legal system, along with the newly signed Free Trade Agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Free Trade Agreement Vietnam and EU (EVFTA), Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The new generation of Free Trade Agreements with a high degree of comprehensive commitment will help enhance Vietnam’s position in the world, helping Vietnamese timber enterprises get closer to the existing wood product value chain with global customers, creating a positive spillover effect on potential buyers, increasing export and import of goods and services among Vietnam and regions and countries around the world.
