Industrial production in August was severely affected when the Covid-19 epidemic continued to develop complicatedly. Some localities had to implement social distancing to prevent the pandemic following Directive No. 16/CT-TTg. The industrial production index in August 2021 was estimated to decrease by 4.2% compared to the previous month and decreased by 7.4% compared to the same period last year. In the eight months of 2021, the industrial production index increased by 5.6% compared to the same period of 2020.
The index of industrial production (IIP) in August 2021 was estimated to decrease by 4.2% over the previous month and down 7.4% from the same period last year, of which the mining industry went down by 2.4%; manufacturing decreased by 9.2%; electricity production and distribution went up by 1.5%; water supply, waste and wastewater management, and treatment up 0.2%.
Overall, in the eight months of 2021, the IIP was estimated to increase by 5.6% over the same period last year. Although it was higher than the growth rate of 2.2% in the same period in 2020 but much lower than the growth rate of 9.5 % of the same period in 2019. Of which, the manufacturing rose by 7.0% (the same period last year up 3.7%), contributing 5.9 percentage points to the general growth; electricity production and distribution went up by 6.6%, contributing 0.6 percentage points; water supply, waste and wastewater management, and treatment peaked up by 4.4%, contributing 0.1 percentage points; the mining industry alone shrank by 6.2%, down by 01 percentage points in the general growth rate.
The index of production in 8 months 2021 belonging to 2-digit industrial activities significantly increased compared to the same period last year: Manufacture of basic metal (30.4%); motor vehicles; trailers and semi-trailers (23.1%); machinery and equipment n.e.c (9.2%); textiles and furniture (both 8.2%); leather and related products (7.9%); computer, electronic and optical products (7.8%); Waste collection, treatment, and disposal activities; materials recovery (7.4%); Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (6.6%); coke and refined petroleum products (6.0%); wearing apparel (5.9%). On the opposite side, IIP of some activities decreased: Manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products (-13.9%); extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas (-10.7%); repair and installation of machinery and equipment (-7.6%); sewerage and sewer treatment activities (-3.6%); tobacco products (-1.7%); printing and reproduction of recorded media (-1.0%); mining of coal and lignite (-0.9%).
The production index in August 2021 compared to the same period last year of some localities decreased sharply due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic such as Ben Tre (-60.1%); Dong Thap (-59.1%); Ho Chi Minh City (-49.2%); Vinh Long (-41.5%); Tay Ninh (-36.9%); Soc Trang (-31.4%); Hau Giang (-29.5%); Khanh Hoa (-28.6%); Tien Giang (-27%); Can Tho (-25.9%); Kien Giang (-25.6%); Long An (-20.9%); Da Nang (-17.1%); An Giang and Quang Nam (both down 15.5%); Dong Nai (-13.3%); Binh Duong (-12.6%); Hanoi (-6.4%); Ba Ria-Vung Tau (-3.7%). Some localities have increased IIP such as Hai Phong (21.2%); Ha Nam (18.5%); Hai Duong (17.8%); Quang Ninh (17.5%); Thai Binh (15.8%); Nghe An (14.9%); Ninh Thuan and Nam Dinh (both up 14.2%); Quang Tri (13.7%); Bac Giang (13.1%); Kon Tum (12.5%); Quang Ngai (11.4%).
The production index of some localities in eight months, 2021 compared to the same period last year decreased sharply due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic: (1) Dong Thap decreased by 10.9% due to a decrease of 66.1% in textiles; tobacco products decreased by 47.4%; beverages decreased by 29%; food products decreased by 11.8%. (2) Khanh Hoa decreased by 7.9% as production of motorcycles and motorbikes decreased by 24.2%; other non-metallic mineral products decreased by 19.4%; beverages decreased by 16.7%; wearing apparel decreased by 2.3%. (3) Ben Tre decreased by 6.9% as the textiles decreased by 19.6%; food products down 12.6%; computer, electronic and optical products decreased by 12.5%; wearing apparel decreased by 10.3%. (4) Ho Chi Minh City decreased by 6.6% due to an 18.5% decrease in wearing apparel; beverages decreased by 17%; pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemicals, and botanical products decreased by 14.2%; Repair and installation of machinery and equipment decreased by 13.3%; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, decreased by 12.7%. (5) Tra Vinh decreased by 4% as the rubber and plastics products decreased by 31.2%; wearing apparel decreased by 13.2%; food products decreased by 7.7%. (6) Ba Ria-Vung Tau decreased by 3% due to a 10% decrease in crude petroleum and natural gas extraction; the fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, decreased by 4.4%.
The IIP index in some localities in the eight months of 2021 increased compared to the same period last year: (1) Ninh Thuan increased by 34.1% due to an increase of 18% in the Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; food products up 17.7%; textiles up 3.7%. (2) Nghe An increased by 23.1% as Manufacture of rubber and plastics products up 50.8%; wearing apparel up 48.6%; textiles up 41.9%. (3) Hai Phong increased by 20.6% due to an increase of 48.2% in Manufacture of wearing apparel; textiles up 26.5%; leather and related products up 18.3%; computer, electronic and optical products up 18.2%. (4) Bac Ninh increased by 9.8% due to a rise of 38.8% in Manufacture of wearing apparel; beverages up 19.7%; computer, electronic and optical products up 10.3%. (5) Quang Ngai increased by 9% due to the Manufacture of textiles increased by 2.8 times; base metals up 79.1%; other non-metallic mineral products up 25.7%. (6) Hung Yen increased by 8% as the Manufacture of leather and related products up 38.6%; electrical equipment up 18.1%; beverages up 13.3%; wearing apparel up 12%. (7) Quang Ninh increased by 7.4% due to 9.3 times increase in wearing apparel (addition of products from new enterprise Weitai Ha Long Textile Company Limited); 8.9 times increase in computer, electronic and optical products (due to foreign direct investment companies coming into operation from the fourth quarter of 2020, increasing and expanding production in August 2021 such as Electronics Technology Viet Nam company limited, Pully Electronics Technology Viet Nam Company Limited, Bumjin Electronics Vina Company Limited, Competition Company Limited; Electronic vina Company Limited); Printing and reproduction of recorded media up 19.3%; beverage and textile both increased by 17.8%; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment up 11%. (8) Bac Giang increased by 6.5% as base metals up 83.9%; computer, electronic and optical products up 20.9%; pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical, and botanical products up 12.1%. (9) Dong Nai increased by 4.4% due to a rise of 8.3% in Printing and reproduction of recorded media; wearing apparel up 7.1%; leather and related products up 6.6%; textiles up 5.9%. (10) Binh Duong increased by 4.3% as fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment up 19.2%; wood and of products of wood and cork up 7.2%; computer, electronic and optical products up 4.3%.
Some major industrial products in 8 months of 2021 increased sharply over the same period last year: Laminated steel (48.3%); Phone accessories (43.9%); automobiles (27.9%); crude steel, iron (13.7%); leather footwear (12.5%); N.P.K mixed fertilizer (12.3%); powder milk (11.1%); liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (10.6%); mobile phone (10.0%); Animal feed (9.2%); Textile fabric from natural yarn (6.7%). Some products decreased compared to the same period last year: television (-27.1%); Natural gas (in the form of air) (-14.3%); Refined sugar (-9.5%); Extracted crude oil (-6.2%); Monosodium glutamate (-5.7%); Processed fishery products(-5.1%); Aquatic feed (-5).
The number of employees working in industrial enterprises as of 1/8/2021 down 5.3% over the same period last month and 10.6% over the same period last year, of which the number of working employees in the state-owned enterprise sector went down by 0.8% and decreased by 4.3%; non-state enterprises decreased by 5.6% and declined by 9.7%; enterprises of foreign direct investment down 6.0% and 12.0%. By industry, the number of employees working in mining and quarrying down 0.3% over the same period last month and fell by 1.6% against the same period last year; manufacturing down 5.8% and 11.4%; the production and distribution of electricity declined by 0.1% and up 2.0 %; the water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities dropped by 0.7% and 4.1%.
